Online counseling programs are extensive and typically specialty-oriented. Online-based degrees are also becoming more common than campus-based programs, especially at graduate levels, such as the Masters in Counseling.


The most common degree for practicing counselors is the Master's in Counseling, which is widely available online at reputable universities. Master's degrees in clinical counseling and rehabilitation counseling are some of the more popular specialties.

Even though more people are obtaining online degrees, traditional in-class degrees are still the very trusted for employers. Traditional degrees do not require any additional testing or verification for employers, making it the most popular form of degree acquisition. For those that are interested in finding a college to attend, there are a number of universities all across the United States that can provide everything a student is looking for.


Many of our students complete counseling degrees while holding down jobs in schools or other institutions. The program is structured so you don't have to choose between an education and your career. We hold classes nights, live online, or asynchronously online. You can attend our Mount Pleasant campus full-time or part-time; and part-time in a hybrid, hyflex or online format throughout Michigan. Each provides extensive hands-on experience. You will work directly with individuals of all ages as part of a mandatory practicum.


Most master's degrees in counseling take two years of full-time study to complete, including a practicum and a field internship. Some online programs offer accelerated tracks that take as little as 18 months.


Masters degrees in Counseling with concentrations in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC), School Counseling P-12 (SC), and Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education. Our CMHC and SC concentrations are CACREP-accredited (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs).

To provide students with skills and knowledge in conducting needs assessment and research in the field of counseling.E. To prepare M.S./Ed.S.-level graduate students with knowledge and skill in effectively addressing issues and concerns related to diverse populations.F. To provide skill and knowledge in the application of ethical and legal principles in the practice of counseling.


The UA School of Counseling houses Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling, and Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) accredited degree in Marriage & Family Therapy.


A PsyD doctoral degree in psychology is a recent addition in professional counseling degrees. Universities and colleges that specialize in psychology offer this program. A Psychology PsyD program focuses on counseling subjects and provides a minimum amount of coursework in research training. Students can enter into a PsyD program more easily than a PhD program because there is less competition.
